Dear Friends. I know it’s been about a year since you’ve heard from us. There were good reasons for that. One is just my forgetfulness… please forgive me. The second, and I cannot make this up, is that someone hacked our site. We were unable to capture it back until now. So dig this… a year ago this month, we did a week on the road with Mr. Merle Haggard, starting at the Ryman Theater in Nashville. We met and made friends with a really cool guy by the name of Jack Propps (a fellow Okie!) He later told me a friend of his would really enjoy our music and he was going to play him our CD. I thought cool, maybe another fan. Two months go by and Jack calls me to let me know his friend, John Carter, really enjoyed the music (321 BROADWAY) and he wanted to talk to me. In my total ignorance, I asked Jack to clarify John Carter’s last name. Jack laughed and said “Cash, just like Johnny and June.” Part of me was thinking “Hey Jack, don’t you think that would have been a valuable piece of info at the top of the story?” After I got past that, I thought “Cool, I am going to be talking to the son of Johnny Cash”. Sure enough the phone rings and I hear the voice of someone I feel that I’ve known for twenty years, later realizing he makes everyone feel like that. This guy was raised around a lot of love and music and it shows. He also has a really funny, but cool, happy dance he does, that we all got to see during mixes. Let me back up for a second… in this phone call, John Carter invites Carman and me up to the cabin to play some songs for him and maybe we can talk about recording. Later that week we met up at the cabin with both our friend, and fine fiddler, Catlin Evenson. We played about 20 tunes for John over two days. He looked at us on the second day and said “I’d like to record your next record.”
So here we are RISE AND SHINE, produced and recorded by John Carter-Cash. This was truly a beautiful recording experience for us. We cut it all live, 14-songs, two days. Two days of overdubs, banjo, mandolins and horns. John Carter on auto harp and back ups. Chuck Turnerthis guy is greatbehind the controls (check the album credits, we were blessed such great musicians). A few weeks before the session started Carman had told John that she would love something with a little Spanish flair to it. He told us of a song his Dad wrote and recorded back in ’77, “My Cowboys Last Ride.” But it never got much attention. Johnny wrote this song from a woman’s point of view. Oh yeah, we recorded it. Carmen got her wish. We also recorded “Storms On The Ocean” written by A. P. Carter, first recorded back in 1928. So now in April 2007, we are starting to head out on the road. Check tour dates. RISE AND SHINE is available on cdbaby.com. Also check out michaelkleinband.com, these guys are friends of mine from Texas. I write with the band and have produced the last two singles. These guys rock! We hope to see you on our journeys. Thanks for all your support over the years. We hope you enjoy the new music. Rise and Shine.
Your Friend, Paul
